THE SCIENCE
What lactase actually does in your gut
Lactose is a sugar made of two smaller sugars joined together. Your body can only absorb them once they're split apart, and that's lactase's job.
Without enough lactase
Undigested lactose travels to the large intestine, where gut bacteria ferment it. That produces gas and draws in water, causing bloating, cramps and diarrhoea.
With Lea Gogo
The lactase you take breaks lactose down in your small intestine, just like your own enzyme would. No fermentation, no symptoms.
TIMING
When to take lactase tablets
Just before your first bite or sip.
Lactase begins breaking down lactose.
One tablet covers about an hour of eating.

Lactase tablet FAQs
Quick answers about taking Lea Gogo.
How do lactase tablets work?
Lactase tablets supply the lactase enzyme your body isn't producing enough of. Taken with dairy, the enzyme breaks lactose (milk sugar) down into glucose and galactose, two simple sugars your body absorbs easily. This means less undigested lactose reaches your large intestine, where it would otherwise ferment and cause bloating, gas and discomfort.
Do lactase supplements actually work?
Yes. Lactase has an EFSA-authorised health claim: it improves lactose digestion in people who have difficulty digesting lactose, at a minimum of 4,500 FCC units with each lactose-containing meal. Each Lea Gogo tablet contains 12,500 FCC units, well above that level.
Do I chew it or swallow it?
Whilst most of our customers swallow the tablets, some also chew them. It's up to you, the absorbtion is unchanged either way.
When should I take a lactase tablet?
Take your tablet with the first bite or sip of food or drink containing dairy, so the enzyme is in your gut at the same time as the lactose. If your meal lasts longer than about 30–45 minutes, or you have dessert later, take another tablet.
How many tablets do I need?
One Lea Gogo tablet (12,500 FCC) is enough for many everyday meals, such as a latte, a bowl of cereal or a slice of pizza. Larger or very dairy-rich meals may need more. Use our lactose calculator to get a personalised estimate.
How quickly do lactase tablets work?
Lactase starts working as soon as it meets lactose in your digestive tract. That's why timing matters more than speed: take it with your first mouthful rather than before or after eating.
Are lactase pills safe?
Lactase is a naturally occurring digestive enzyme and is generally very well tolerated, and side effects are uncommon. It acts on the lactose in your food and is then digested like any other protein. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
Is it safe to take lactase every day?
Yes, you can take lactase whenever you eat dairy, including every day. It isn't habit-forming, and it doesn't stop your body from producing its own lactase. Always follow the dosage on the label.
Does lactase cure lactose intolerance?
No. Lactase helps you digest lactose at the time you take it, but it doesn't change how much lactase your body makes. That's why you take it with each meal containing dairy.
